How to Style and Care for Stone Jewelry

Wearing stone bracelets alone or stacked

A single stone bracelet is the easiest place to start: one strand of 8mm beads in a neutral like onyx or tiger's eye sits comfortably under a sleeve and reads finished on its own.

For a stack, work with three to five strands and vary the bead size — one larger focal strand with two finer ones creates rhythm, where identical strands can look uniform. Keep either the color family or the bead size consistent so the stack looks intentional rather than accumulated.

Pairing stone colors with metals, leather and clothing

• Warm stones — tiger's eye, carnelian, amber tones — sit naturally with gold-tone metal and brown leather
• Cool stones — lapis, sodalite, amethyst, clear quartz — read cleanly with silver-tone metal and black leather
• Black onyx and white howlite work with both metals and calm down a bright stack
• Turquoise is a color statement in itself; keep the rest of the stack neutral so it stays the focus
• Against patterned clothing, choose one stone color and repeat it; against solid neutrals, a mixed stack has room to be the detail

Protecting the finish

• Put jewelry on last, after fragrance, hairspray, lotion and sunscreen have dried
• Keep pieces away from household cleaners, chlorine, salt water and other harsh chemicals
• Avoid excessive moisture — remove pieces before showering, swimming or exercising
• Take stone bracelets off before sleep to reduce strain on the cord or elastic

Routine cleaning

Wipe pieces with a soft, dry cloth after wear to remove oils and residue. Many natural stones are porous and should not be soaked, steamed or cleaned with abrasive or ultrasonic methods. If a piece needs more than a dry wipe, use a barely damp cloth and dry it immediately and thoroughly.

Storage

Store pieces separately in a soft pouch or a lined box with dividers. Separating them reduces scratching between harder and softer stones and keeps chains from tangling. Keep storage out of prolonged direct sunlight, which can fade the color of some stones over time.
